GM SC Transition Team: afshan d'souza-lodhi, Virginie Assal and Viv Slack

We’re in a period of transition. As GM SC shifts into a fully member-led network, the former Temporary Stewards brought together a small Transition Team for six months to hold things together, not as leaders, but as weavers, coordinators and facilitators to support the network in this next phase.

The Transition Team is here to:

  • Maintain collective infrastructure (finance, comms, governance, etc.)
  • Coordinate Members’ Meetings and decision-making processes
  • Support member-led proposals and the different organising circles
  • Embody the values, vision and red lines of GM SC in practice

The Transition Team is accountable to the membership, not above it. All strategic and funding decisions will be made by members.

Working Principles

The Transition Team is guided by a set of shared principles that shape how we want to work together:

  • This is not a hierarchy but rather a temporary group of people who are committed to supporting the great work already happening within GM. The group is not to hoard power, but to steward GM SC’s infrastructure.
  • While the Transition Team will be made up of members, they are not the whole member network. And while they can and should share expertise, knowledge and information, they are aware of their position within the network, and should listen as much as they speak, without dominating conversations.
  • We centre disability justice and are committed to building in flexibility, slowness, and adapting our organising model to support each other, so that those of us who are neurodivergent, disabled and chronically ill are centred in our ways of working.
  • We practice a “yes, and…” approach by building on ideas put forward by others (in particular by members). Collaboration happens when we connect and build on ideas instead of shutting them down, prioritising imagination and experimentation instead of critique and control.
  • While the Transition Team is accountable to the whole of the GM SC network, we also encourage and expect the Transition Team to practice self-accountability and check in with themselves and each other on how we’re showing up and how power and control might be showing up in our work.
  • They stay alert to shifts needed in GM SC strategy by keeping an eye on the bigger picture and listening to members. If the strategy is no longer serving the membership, they will propose to evolve around it.
  • They work interdependently; each member holds core responsibilities (Finance, Admin, Communication and Governance), but supports the other two across all areas of work. If those roles are not suitable or additional roles are needed, this can be decided by members at a quarterly Members’ Meeting.
